As reported on AVweb, Erickson AirCrane, Inc., in coordination with the Sabah Wildlife Department in Malaysia, has helped relocate an endangered female Sumatran rhinoceros to a wildlife reserve to be paired with a male rhino already within the protected sanctuary. Laurentius Ambu, the director of the Sabah Wildlife Department in Malaysia, said the rhino is “on the verge of extinction” in the local region. “Without the use of Erickson Air-Crane’s huge Sikorsky S-64 helicopter, this rescue would have been impossible,” he said.
According to the Erickson AirCrane website, the S-64F has a realistic lift capacity measuring 22,500 lbs. (10,206 kg.)
The report continues, “the female rhino was transported with the use of a sturdy wooden crate that was lifted aloft by the AirCrane from her remote jungle habitat. “Erickson was proud to play a part in this important initiative, helping to protect this critically endangered species,” company spokesman Brian Carlson told AVweb. This was the second time an AirCrane was used to relocate a Sumatran rhino.

Veteran historic preservationists often grasp for creative opportunities to save an endangered building. In Winter Park, Florida, advocates for an 1885 house combined innovative nonprofit collaborations, engineering feats, and grassroots community outreach to mount an extraordinary preservation operation.
The effort began with a crisis all too familiar to preservationists: New owners of a historic home on a premium lakeside lot announced plans to tear it down and rebuild on site. In June 2013, thanks to skillful mediation, the owners agreed to postpone demolition by six months and donate the 128-year-old-house to anyone who could move it. This short reprieve gave advocates a key window of opportunity.
The U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced a national safety stand-down from June 2 to 6 to raise awareness among employers and workers about the hazards of falls, which account for the highest number of deaths in the construction industry.
“Falls account for more than a third of all deaths in this industry,” said Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. “We’re working with employers, workers, industry groups, state OSH plans, and civic and faith-based organizations to host safety stand-downs that focus on recognizing hazards and preventing falls. We are getting the message out to America’s employers that safety pays and falls cost.”
