LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) has launched the eighth edition of its authoritative Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Lifting Equipment (COPSULE), along with a new version of its companion publication, the User’s Pocket Guide to Lifting Equipment. First produced in 1981, COPSULE is written by independent industry experts and is widely regarded as the leading reference document for the selection, operation and maintenance of overhead lifting equipment. Addressing common causes of lifting-related accidents, COPSULE supports safer working practices and provides practical guidance to help staff comply fully with relevant health and safety legislation. The members of the Web Sling & Tie Down Association (WSTDA) elected its 2014-2015 Board of Directors at the 2014 Annual Meeting, held May 6-8 in Charleston, SC. The Board of Directors also appointed the association’s Officers for 2014-2015.
Jeff Iden, Cargo Equipment Corporation, Elgin, IL was elected to serve as President of the Association. The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) Wire Rope workgroup has held three Wire Rope Workshops, the fourth in the series ‘Optimum System Design for High Value Subsea Construction Ropes’ will be held 18 March 2014 at the Radisson Blu Hotel at Amsterdam Airport.
“Our bi-annual Wire Rope Workshops are proving extremely relevant and interesting. Over 90 attended the last one in Amsterdam in October which focused on the lubrication of high value subsea construction ropes; others have looked at high value wire rope issues, and at non-destructive testing” explains IMCA’s Technical Director, Jane Bugler.
“The March event will embrace the operators’ view of current and future system requirements; the system designer’s approach for wire rope interaction (storage, routing, winches, sheaves and active heave systems); rope qualification methods for specific systems; fully integrated monitoring systems and interaction with rope system; and multi-fail and parallel winch systems in deep water. LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) is hosting another of its popular ‘Lifting the Load – Out on the Road’ Roadshows at the Hilton Hotel in Bristol in the UK, on Tuesday March 18th. Offering expert presentations on the safe and legal use of overhead lifting equipment, as well as an introduction to the work of LEEA and its members, admission to the event is free-of-charge for visitors who register in advance.
Topics covered by the presentations include an overview of the documentation that should accompany lifting equipment in the UK, which is a common cause of concern and misunderstanding among end users and suppliers alike. Protecting Louisiana workers from construction industry hazards is the goal of an alliance signed in July between the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Louisiana Associated General Contractors.
“This alliance provides an opportunity for OSHA and members of the Louisiana Associated General Contractors to come together through forums, round-table discussions, meetings and conferences to discuss safety and health issues associated with the needs of member employers,” said Dorinda Folse, OSHA’s area director in Baton Rouge. “This voluntary, cooperative relationship will also provide training and outreach to enhance employee safety.” Continue reading
The LEEA has completed its first on-site audits of prospective member companies based in China. H-Lift Industries Co. Ltd (Shanghai), General Lifting Engineering Co. Ltd (SKIP Lifting) (Zhangjaikou), Shanghai ABS Technical Inspection Co Ltd and Mak Kee International H.K.Ltd (Hong Kong) all successfully completed the rigorous assessments, which were undertaken during a visit to China by one of the LEEA’s team of technical officers.
