In Austria, both the Archbishop office of Vienna and Ernsthof Forstverwaltung are among a growing number of forest owners who rely on fibre as opposed to steel wire ropes for reasons of ergonomics and safety.
Between them, the two harvest around 25.000 m3 of timber annually and both are recipients of the prestigious State Award of Role Model Forest Management, granted by Austria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. Continue reading

St. Pierre Manufacturing Corporation in Worcester is bucking this trend. The St. Pierre family is already onto their third generation of employees and are still growing, said Richard P. St. Pierre, manager of the company’s lifting division.
“It can be very difficult, but it’s now smoothing out,” said Mr. St. Pierre, 67. “It can be difficult working with younger people thinking they know more than they do.” Continue reading

Designed and fabricated by Bishop Lifting Products (BLP) Houston, this sling basket was created to secure and recover the NASA capsule pictured to the right. After being deployed into one of the outer atmospheres, it will return to earth and land in the water. A team of NASA and Navy divers will recover the capsule to study it. This sling was specifically designed to not disrupt or impact any part of the capsule, in order to study it correctly.

UK based Bickers Lifting was recently tasked with lowering three brand new Mercedes GLA’s 189 meters vertically down the Winsford Rock Salt Mine in Cheshire. In a project designed to take the car as far off the beaten track as possible, four road-going GLAs were lowered, nose first, into the mine. Once lowered, journalists drove the Mercedes GLA’s around 130 miles of the Salt Mine tunnels.
For this high profile project, Bickers relied on Straightpoint for accurate weight measurement to achieve the most accuracy and safety in lowering the vehicles.
Darren Short of Bickers Lifting said of their role, “Our part was to design, fabricate and test the rig used for the lowering, as the shaft was only a certain size, the cars had to go down vertically. You will see from the pictures of us testing the rig we had a Straightpoint loadcell to give us accurate weights of the whole setup.” Continue reading
