Working with family members can often be problematic, frustrating and difficult.
Only 30 percent of family businesses survive to be handed down to a second generation; that number dwindles to 12 percent for the third generation, according to the Family Business Institute.
St. Pierre Manufacturing Corporation in Worcester is bucking this trend. The St. Pierre family is already onto their third generation of employees and are still growing, said Richard P. St. Pierre, manager of the company’s lifting division.
“It can be very difficult, but it’s now smoothing out,” said Mr. St. Pierre, 67. “It can be difficult working with younger people thinking they know more than they do.” Continue reading
The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is the latest hope of the U.S. space program for sending humans beyond Earth orbit and onto destinations far, far away. Since the retirement of its space shuttle fleet, the Orion is NASA’s only crewed space vehicle under a recent revamp of the program’s long-range plans, called the NASA Authorization Act of 2010. The new strategy is to use the Orion Crew Module (or capsule), being built for NASA by Lockheed Martin Corp., and the Service Module, under development by EADS Astrium for the European Space Agency, to send crews of four to six astronauts on missions to orbit the Moon, explore nearby asteroids, and ultimately travel into orbit around Mars. The MTC15 is a has a capacity of 600 tonnes and a load moment of 15,000 tonne meters. Mammoet claims that no other heavy lifting device on the market combines the MTC15’s features with high lifting capacity and potentially lower operational costs.
The range of robust handling and lifting equipment supplied by the J D Neuhaus company is currently in use around the world on Jack-up rigs, Semi-submersibles, Drill ships and FPSO vessels. Their product range incorporates both air and hydraulically powered hoists, with individual lifting capacities ranging from 550lbs to 100 metric tons. These products can also be incorporated into single or double girder overhead travelling cranes, underslung cranes with special low headroom trolley designs, together with purpose designed slewing jib cranes. Hoists can be supplied for specific function duties such as BOP handling (up to 200 metric tons), as well as providing virtually unlimited lifting and general load movement solutions including both oblique and horizontal pulling under pre-determined conditions. Injuries within workplace environments can occur when personnel are lifting or moving inappropriately heavy loads. The use of mechanical lifting equipment helps, but can also be time consuming, particularly where rope or chain wheel manual operations are associated with raising loads to above head height. Air powered lifting has been proved to be safe, effective, economical and time saving, particularly where there is an existing compressed-air power source available.
The J D Neuhaus company have a world renowned reputation for the supply of high performance air operated handling equipment, to operate in the toughest environments for individual loads up to 100 tons. However, they are also able to supply air hoists designed for operating in light to medium engineering and general workshop applications. These products ensure workshop health and safety compliance for load capacities up to 2 tons, with hoists that have been manufactured to the same high standards as their heavier duty equipment.
Two ranges of these general lower duty hoists are available, including the JDN Mini series with models available for payload ratings of 125, 250, 500 and 980kg. Continue reading

The J D Neuhaus company have been designing and manufacturing handling equipment for over two and a half centuries, and pioneered the use of compressed air for powering handling equipment in the early 1950’s. The latter development ensured that their lifting and pulling equipment was suitable for use in hazardous areas and environments where there was a potential explosion risk.
Their products, which now also include optional hydraulic powered operation, are used worldwide in all major heavy industries such as mining, oil and gas, construction, shipbuilding, steelworks and even aerospace related for handling rocket parts. Continue reading
We have discovered that parts of the original Modulift products have been doctored to make them fit together with manufactured imitations. These are mainly being used in the US market, this causes us great concern that the lift they are conducting may not be safe or comply with standards. Continue reading
